Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs

Helping you worship God better!

850 hymns • wide genre • recovered verses • a teaching hymnal

Download an information sheet and the Table of Contents

This is the newest hymnal published among those associated with churches of Christ. Its goal is to help saints glorify God in musical worship. One of the most noticeable features is the use of Phrased Notation. The width of the hymn is determined by the words and phrases, not the size of the page.

Additional highlights include: Smyth sewn binding so it lays flat, custom-milled paper to avoid bleed-through, yet light, with no sheen. It has literally been "weighed in the balances” on a scientific scale in a laboratory, and is one of the lightest of the hymnals currently available. The dimensions give it the feel of a “handbook,” literally – it fits the hand well. Good use of white space, as in a book of poetry, and the hymn selection, a mix of old and new, is marvelous.

  1. Good mix of old and new hymns 4 Star Review

Posted by on Jan. 16, 2015

I am part of a smaller congregation with a diverse range of ages. Our goal was to find a songbook that would be uplifting and contain familiar content for all of our members. For those reasons, we really like this song book! I particularly appreciate the effort the editors made to include a good mix of older and newer songs.

A few other notes: The book contains some unique formatting can be a little confusing in the beginning (presumably to contain a larger number of songs). This isn't a big issue, but it takes some getting used to. Also, there are a few songs that have different arrangements than what I'd prefer. Although, to be fair, I would think that's probably the case with any song book. Other than that, we really love it, and I think it is excellent! I would definitely recommend it.

  2. Not a big fan! 3 Star Review

Posted by on Dec. 10, 2014

I totally agree with the comments of James W. Tackett on Jun. 24, 2013. Also, was any effort made to correct unscriptural statements, eg: "...and with Jesus REIGN" forever"?

[NOTE FROM THE EDITORS: A considerable effort was made to ensure scriptural content in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. Regarding the line "and with Jesus reign forever" in "Where the Gates Swing Outward Never" (number 709 in PHASS), it is the author's original and it echos the following scriptures.

    2 Timothy 2:12
If we endure, We shall also reign with Him.
If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

    Revelation 22:5
There shall be no night there:
They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light.
And they shall reign forever and ever.

The editors would be happy to discuss this with the person who originally left this comment. If you will contact the bookstore, contact information will be provided. Thanks.]

  3. Phrased Notation 4 Star Review

Posted by on Nov. 6, 2014

Excellent book as far as content. I'm not a fan of the phrased notation, though. Also, it will take me a while to get used to the song numbers being centered with the title although that's not a big deal. It may be that we are just most comfortable with what we are used to...? Over-all the hard work that went into this hymnal is very evident. Good job!

  4. New Songbooks 5 Star Review

Starting a new work and needed song books that combined multiple books... This one met those criteria....

  5. Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs Hymnal 3 Star Review

Posted by on Aug. 25, 2014

The print quality of the material in this song book is inferior to previous versions. It does not have the superior quality look of the old issues.

[NOTE: whoever left this comment, please contact John, the General Manager, at john@truthpublications.com; if you are unhappy with the print quality of your hymnal, we want to make it right.]

  6. GREAT collection of songs and SUPER LIGHT 5 Star Review

Posted by on Aug. 15, 2014

My congregation has been using these hymnals since they were released, and they have been a real treat to sing from. The font is a lot larger and easier to read than the other hymnals, and the selection of songs is unparalleled. The editors also did a great job of simplifying some of the songs that had difficult harmony.

I am impressed with the layout and the super light weight. We have lots of new songs to learn on our singing nights, but plenty of old faithfuls to sing during the month.

    Highly recommend this hymnal!

  7. Nicely done 5 Star Review

Posted by on Jul. 21, 2014

I like the layout and overall typeset... very nicely done. Nice binding. Only possible negative is that due to the number of songs, the book may be a bit heavy for some to hold.

  8. Beautiful Songs 4 Star Review

Posted by on Jun. 16, 2014

Although there are many songs in this hymnal that are included in others used by churches of Christ, it contains some gems. For instance, #198 - Exalted is worth the price of the book to me - a perfect arrangement of lyrics and music to lift one's spirit in worship.

  9. Pleased! 5 Star Review

Book was in great shape and delivered quickly.

  10. Quality good but don't see a need for it. 4 Star Review

Posted by on Jun. 24, 2013

Just received my copy of Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs. So these are my first thoughts about it. The "phrased notation" is a nice touch but I do not find it all that useful in a book. Such phrasing is handy with slides for transitional purposes but not in a book. Also, I noticed right away that there is no author/composer index. Probably no biggie for most folks. But there is no scripture index which is very useful to song leaders.
